Of these "Most Recommended Stories" the one that struck closest to home was the "Family fights eviction from manufactured-home park".This article reminded me that all of us are only one "pen stroke" away from losing our homes. Recent court decisions favoring the use of "emminent domain" for corporate owned real estate development concerns, makes me wonder what the future holds for many hard working, tax paying citizens here in America. The "American Dream" of owning ones home without the fear of it being taken away, so the rich can become richer, is truly frightening. Wake up America, you could be next!

Good job bringing up the eminent domain issue. I still am horrified about that ruling, as are many Americans. Undoubtedly, it will unfairly impact the lower social classes the most, as you imply in your blog.

Julie, I too am horrified about the loss of our constitutionally given rights to pursue our own course in life without judicial restraint. The lower social classes are always the ones most deeply impacted by these rulings (as you stated). Power corrupts and absolute power... Part of the “American Dream” is to own a home without the fear of losing it to some major corporate entity. I fear for future generations in their pursuit of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. Thank you for your comment, Mark.

Wow, that was very interesting to read. It is a shame that we are in fear of large corporations, and the government scooping up our property in order as they say "better improve" the city. I believe there is a case going on now in Virgina where this gentleman is in battle over his property in regards to eminent domain. How in the world can you take someone to court over YOUR OWN property? All I can comment is WOW!

tricey40,
Just a couple of facts that I dug up regarding this "eminent domain" issue.
1) The fifth amendment to the constitution requires just compensation for any land taken under this provision for "public use". The Supreme Court ruled last year that "public use" includes virtually anything that a local condeming authority decides is for the good of the community.
1) Governor Richarson (New Mexico) is the first governor to veto any reform legislation.
2) President Bush (June 23, 2006) issued an executive order stating the federal government must limit its use of taking private property for "public use". He further stated in this order that "eminent domain" must not be used to advance the economic interests of private parties in the ownership or use of said property. I will be continuing to follow this important matter throughout the semester. Thank you for your comments. Mark
